Encyclopedia - Antonov An-24

After the Ilyushin Il-14 was deemed to be an ageing aircraft, Antonov Design Bureau started designing the Antonov An-24 in 1957, with the first flight in 1959. It has since proven to be a highly successful transport aircraft.

The Antonov An-24 is a high-wing monoplane with a turboprop engine mounted on each wing. The landing gear retracts into the engine nacelles. The high-wing layout is ideally suited to protect the propellers from sand/stones when operating from unprepared strips.

The Antonov An-24 was initially built at the Kiev-Svyatoshino plant, but Xian Aircraft Industrial Corporation in China has since taken over production. They have since improved the avionics and systems to make it more lucrative for more modern operators. More than 1,350 Antonov An-24's have been built.
