Encyclopedia - Aermacchi MB-326

The Aermacchi MB-326 first flew on 10 December 1957, powered by a 794kg (1,750lb) Viper 8 turbojet. The Italian Air Force ordered 15 pre-production aircraft, and later extended the order for another 85 aircraft. Aermacchi soon produced the MB-326B and -326F models, which were armed versions for use in the close-support role and also for weapons training.

The first MB-326K flew on 22 August 1970. It was a single-seat version used in the ground-attack role, with the more powerful Viper 540 or the Viper 632-43 turbojets. In 1974 three aircraft were ordered for the Dubai Police Air Wing for use in the counter-insurgency role. In 1975, the South African Atlas Aircraft Corporation started producing the MB-326K under license as the Impala Mk.2. These aircraft saw extensive action in the Bush War in Angola.
