Encyclopedia - Aermacchi MB-339
After receiving a study contract from the Italian Air Force, Aermacchi undertook nine different studies to create a second-generation jet trainer to succeed the ageing Aermacchi MB.326 and Aeritalia (Fiat) G91 fleet. The most promising studies were two models of the Aermacchi MB.339, powered by the Larzac turbofan (MB.339L) or the Viper 600 series turbojet (MB.339V). In February 1975 the Italian Air Force adopted the Viper powered version, and the first of two prototypes first flew on 12 August 1976 at Venegono airfield.
The redesign of the forward fuselage allowed the rear seat (occupied by the instructor) to be raised above the front seat (occupied by the pupil). Both seats are Martin-Baker zero-zero ejection seats. The avionics were substantially upgraded to include TACAN, IFF and both VHF and UHF radio. The MB.339 retains the six underwing hardpoints of its predecessor.
Following the two prototypes the Italian Air Force ordered an initial batch of 15. Italy received a total of 101 MB.339’s, most of which are MB.339A trainer variants. Other operators include Argentina, Dubai, Ghana, Malaysia, Nigeria and Peru.
The MB.339K is an uprated version powered by the Viper Mk.680 turbojet, developing 19.57kN (4,400lb). The MB.339B is also powered by this engine, being similar to the trainer but with improved ground-attack capability. The MB.339C had advanced digital avionics for improved capability in the training and ground-attack roles.
