Encyclopedia - Dassault Mirage 2000
In December 1975 Dassault received the approval to develop a replacement for the ageing Mirage F-1. Although it looks very similar to the Mirage III it is a completely new aircraft, with more refined aerodynamics and improved technology. The prototype first flew on 10 March 1978, and the first production version was delivered in 1983.
The Mirage 2000 is a delta-winged, single engine fighter with ground attack capability. It features all the modern bells and whistles, like fly-by-wire systems, a Heads-up display (HUD) and HOTAS (Hands on Throttle and Stick). It has nine hardpoints under the wings and fuselage for carrying various weapons. The single-seat version is also equipped with two internal 30mm machine guns. Its Doppler radar can detect up to 24 targets, and can track the 8 highest priority threats.
