Encyclopedia - Lockheed C-130 Hercules
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is truly one of the greatest airlifters of all time. It sprouted from a decision by the US Air Force in 1951 for a fleet of turboprop transport aircraft. These were to be used by the Military Airlift Command (MAC) and the Tactical Air Command (TAC). Lockheed was awarded the contract to build two YC-130 prototypes in September 1952. The first of these prototypes made its maiden flight on 23 August 1954. The first production aircraft flew on 7 April 1955, and delivery to the TAC units begin in December 1956. The prototypes were assembled at the Lockheed Plant in Burbank California, whereafter the assembly plant moved to Marietta, Georgia.
The C-130 Hercules is a high-wing, four-engined monoplane with a conventional tail.It features a hydraulically operated ramp to ease loading of the aircraft, and can be opened in flight to allow for airborne drops. The aircraft is fully pressurized, enabling it to cruise at altitudes in excess of 30,000ft (9,144m). The retractable tricycle type landing gear has been designed to enable the C-130 to operate from remote strips.
The C-130's roles include : Transport, Ground Attack (AC-130 - fitted with various armament along the side of the aircraft), in-flight refuelling, fire-bombing and electronic warfare.
