Encyclopedia - McDonnell Douglas MD-82 / Douglas DC-9

Construction of the DC-9 began on 26 July 1963 and the first prototype flew on 25 February 1965, It is a cantilever low-wing monoplane with a T-tail and all-swept surfaces. The initial Series 10 Model 11 had a flight crew of two, and could accommodate between 80 and 90 passengers depending on layout. Power was provided by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-5 turbofans mounted on the side of the rear fuselage. The DC-9 first entered service on 8 December 1965 with Delta Airlines. Total production figures of all variants are in excess of 2,000.
