Encyclopedia - Robinson R-22/R-44
The R-22 was designed by Frank Robinson, who founded the Robinson Helicopter Company. The prototype was powered by an 85kW(115hp) Lycoming O235 piston engine, and made its first flight on 28 August 1975. The first production aircraft were delivered in October 1979. Deliveries exceed 3,600 R-22 helicopters.
The R-22 is a two-seat light helicopter. Features include an RPM governor, rotor brake and an auxiliary fuel system. The cockpit also features dual removable controls.
Design on the R-44 started in 1986, and the prototype made its first flight on 10 December 1990.
The R-44 is a four-seat light helicopter. It features an RPM governer, rotor brake and an automatic clutch. It is powered by a Lycoming O-540 flat-six piston engine that has been de-rated to 165kW (225hp). The Raven Series of the R-44 features adjustable pedals, elastomeric tail rotor bearings and hydraulically-powered flight controls.
